You Are Redeemed

From the time I was a little girl I knew being a Christian meant that you were redeemed. Hymns we sang in church spoke of this truth. “Redeemed” is actually the favorite song of my grandfather. Even more recently it has become a hymn my daughter sings loudly throughout our home and at church. What a blessing it is to be redeemed!

redeemed

Redeemed—how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am. Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child, and forever, I am.

Redeemed and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.

I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long;
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.

I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose way I delight;
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.

What Does It Mean to Be Redeemed?

What do you think of when you hear the word redeemed? We talk of redeeming coupons, offers, etc., but as a Christian what does it mean?

Redeemed: Ransomed, delivered from bondage, distress, penalty, liability or from the possession of another, by paying an equivalent.

Deliverance Requires Great Sacrifice

That definition makes me think we need a new word for couponing and offers! It truly only speaks of deliverance, one that required a sacrifice.

Our lives needed to be saved. In and of ourselves we were dead and bound for hell. The very definition of redeemed states that an equivalent must be paid for that which is being delivered. A perfect life for imperfect lives was the reason for Jesus’ life being sacrificed.

Take a moment and think of your life before Christ. All those things that you wished you had never done, said or thought…those are the very things that Jesus died to redeem. His blood washed them all away.

Without Christ’s sacrifice, we would still be in bondage…to our sin, the ways of the world, our wicked and deceitful hearts, selfish ways, etc. Truly we are nothing without Christ…
